The term “Mysore-style” refers to the city of Mysore in south India where the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught the Ashtanga system, as he learned it from his guru, Krishnamacharya, for roughly seventy years. It is a self-practice method of teaching in which students learn individually in a group setting. The system is taught step by step, asana by asana, at a pace unique to the individual needs of each student. Development of a personal practice is promoted with no pressure to keep up with a guided class, a teacher's pace, or neighboring students. Special attention, instruction, and adjustments are given from the teacher. A common misconception is that this class is only for "advanced" students, and/or that you must already have the series memorized. This is far from the truth! Mysore class is the best and safest way for a new student to learn the Ashtanga method. The best and most rewarding results will be seen with at least 2-3 classes per week. This is the most authentic way to learn yoga and the safest way to progress!
